Total milk sent to processors exceeded 1,450 million litres between January and September 2012.

Milk production in September 2012, was 10.8 million litres higher than September 2011.

The increase in milk deliveries is down to a relatively cool and wet Spring, which has seen milk yields increase.

Much of the increased volume from certain regions is going into cheese production, a sector which is seeing high levels of growth.

Lower cheese prices have driven this market, with demand increasing more than production, which has seen imports increase.

The production of milk powder has seen a slight fall, however butter and cream production increased.

Global milk prices have been recovering over recent months, and this trend is expected to continue.

The Ministry predicts milk production to continue to increase over the coming months, with favourable weather, a larger cow herd and seasonal calving.
