Australian beef breeding consultant Dick Wale has returned from a study tour of the centre with a wake-up call for Australian breeders, reports ABCRural.

He says the current trend of selecting for size is unsustainable, particularly in Australia.

"From a commercial cattleman's viewpoint, they want cows that will get in calf and stay in their breeding program as long as possible; they want bulls that will do the same," he said.

"It's no good having the best genetics if they don't produce daughters that will hang around, and do a job for the commercial cattleman."
