Japan Lifts Five-Month Ban on US Packer
JAPAN - Japan has lifted a beef import ban on shipments from a US beef packer, whose consignment in December had included one box of bone-in striploins containing Specified Risk Material (SRM).
The suspension imposed on the Nebraska based plant in late December 2011, caused a shortage of shortplates in Japan during the past five months. Frozen US shortplate averaged 1,150 yen/kg in the wholesale market last week, the highest on record. Demand for Australian navel end brisket also lifted during the period, underpinned by the short supplies.
The news of the import resumption was posted on the website of Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare late last week.
