While January and February were strong months, production fell 19 per cent in the last month of the quarter, as import prices remained high and NZ faced increased competition into the US manufacturing beef market, largely from Australia.

NZ veal production also dropped in the first quarter, to 53 tonnes cwt - 9 per cent lower than the corresponding period last year. However, this is expected to increase in coming months, as the cow culling season begins to build.
