Speaking at Food and Drink Expo 2012, Mr Paice said agriculture was a critical industry in which Britain was excelling.

But he was keen to point out that while our domestic demand for locally grown and produced food was fresher and better for communities, the UK should also be looking to export and open up new markets.

He said: "Food and drink exports are growing and we are working to open new markets to help build a business mindset. We want to encourage small and medium businessed to explore industry overseas. I will be visiting China in May to look at how we could do just that.

"The livestock sector is showing signs of turning round and farmers will respond to these positive market signals, beef and lamb have huge potential overseas.

"We also have the perfect opportunity with the Olympics to showcase everything which is good about Britain to the rest of the world."

Defra launched their export action plan a few months ago, which is hoped will pay dividends for home producers in the long run.
