Strong Demand For Young Cattle

MLA reports that numbers increased at Toowoomba Elders in a good quality yarding. Yearling steers to restock and feed were firm to 10¢ dearer, mainly selling from 215¢ to 229¢/kg. Heavy grown steers were 3¢ higher on 208¢, while the few bullocks generally sold at 205¢/kg. Medium weight cows were 20¢ dearer, with the tighter numbers helping prices average 186¢/kg.

Throughput almost doubled at Tamworth with more yearling cattle penned. Light yearling steers were 5¢ cheaper on 243¢/kg. The medium weights to feed mainly sold at 228¢ and the light yearling heifers were dearer on 210¢/kg. Grown steers to feed sold at 204¢, as the heavy pens to process settled on 164¢/kg. Heavy D4 cow pens topped at 169¢ and averaged 163¢/kg.

Supply edged higher at Wagga and quality improved. Yearlings to feed generally sold from 205¢ to 219¢, while those to the trade were firm on 202¢/kg. the heifer portion were mainly 13¢ dearer on 206¢, and the heavy grown steer pens held firm on 194¢/kg. A large run of heavy cows were up to 3¢ higher, as the D4 pens averaged 157¢/kg.

The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) was 5.75¢ higher for the week on 407¢/kg cwt, with young cattle selling to strong demand. The trade steer indicator was 6¢ higher on 212¢ and feeder steer prices gained 1¢ - to 219¢/kg lwt. Heavy steers were 3¢ dearer on 198¢ and medium cow prices improved 4¢ - to 155¢/kg lwt.
