This new award aims to recognise actions taken by dairy farmers across Canada who produce milk in a sustainable way.

“DFC created this award because we know that many farmers have adopted innovative ways to be more sustainable on their farms, said Wally Smith, President of Dairy Farmers of Canada. “This Award aims to discover innovative practices that go beyond industry standards and generally recommended practices to reduce their environmental footprint.”

The Award for Canadian Dairy Farm Sustainability will recognise Canadian dairy farmers that have adopted practices that are environmentally sustainable, financially viable, bring social benefits and can be reproduced on other farms. Candidates must demonstrate respect for the environment overall, and can showcase projects that show wise management of natural resources, conservation practices, efficient use of energy and or reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

DFC invites dairy farmers to submit their candidacy, or that of a fellow dairy farmer, to this new award before January 31, 2012. Having an up-to-date environmental farm plan (developed under provincial programmes) and holding quota are two pre-requisites for this Award.

There will be one finalist in each of the four regions of Canada: the Western provinces, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. One winner will be selected among the four finalists. The overall winner will receive a prize of $2000, a trophy and a trip to receive the Award in person at Dairy Farmer of Canada’s 2012 annual general meeting in St-John’s, Newfoundland. The three runner-up finalists will each receive a prize of $1000.
