Taiwan Imports Record Beef Shipments In 2010-11
TAIWAN - Taiwan imported a record volume of beef during 2010-11, totalling 85,033 tonnes swt - an increase of four per cent on the previous year, reports Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).

MLA states that the increased demand for imported beef was supported by Taiwan's positive economic fundamentals, including good economic growth, easing unemployment, strong consumer confidence and a robust retail and foodservice sector.
Imports of US beef jumped 31 per cent year-on-year, to 29,653 tonnes swt, including a 60 per cent surge in chilled beef shipments and a 24 per cent increase in the volume of frozen beef.
The increase for 2010-11 was despite the Taiwan Department of Health's ban on US beef in January 2011, which saw a slowdown in imports of chilled US beef into the market.
MLA reports that Taiwan imported 31,566 tonnes swt of Australian beef during 2010-11, up one per cent compared with the previous year.
Imports of chilled Australian beef almost doubled during the year, largely during the first half of 2011, as increased chilled Australian beef volumes were ordered to replace the shortfall of US beef. Australia recorded a 37 per cent imported beef market share for 2010-11.
Imports of New Zealand beef decreased 18 per cent year-on-year, to 17,380 tonnes swt.
