OIE: Anthrax Outbreak Reported

ITALY - An outbreak of Anthrax has been reported to the OIE by Dr Romano Marabelli, Chief Veterinary Officer, Department for Veterinary Public Health, Nutrition and Food Safety, Ministry of Health, Rome, Italy.

There have been three cases of Anthrax reported to the OIE.

The three outbreaks are as follows:

  • Padula, Salerno, CAMPANIA - reported 01/09/2011
  • Montesano sulla Marcellana, Salerno, CAMPANIA - 30/08/2011
  • Montesano sulla Marcellana, Salerno, CAMPANIA - 07/09/2011

All cases so far are unresolved.

The outbreak effects the whole country.

So far, the three outbreaks have resulted in seven cases, leading to seven deaths.

The source of the outbreak is likely to be due to the introduction of new live anaimals.

Control measures currently being applied include:

  • Movement control inside the country
  • Disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s)
  • No vaccination
  • No treatment of affected animals
