French Market Embraces Angus

UK - The Angus is starting to make its mark in France with French breeders importing around 100 animals from England this summer.

With another import of the breed still to be completed, approximately 100 animals from 11 Angus-registered pedigree herds in England, will have been exported to four French cattle breeders in the south west and west of the country.

The latest news has come after EBLEX at its seventh annual Export Conference in June predicted economic forces and access to new markets would help drive strong export growth in the UK beef and sheep sector for the foreseeable future.

Following the import of two bulls to a farm near Tours, two Red Angus bulls were imported by a farm near Cognac. This was followed by two Black Angus bulls, 10 heifers and 23 maiden heifers going to a breeder with Limousine and Gasconne cows in Montbernard, near Toulouse.

Another major deal saw a top Blonde d’Aquitaine breeder, based near Rouen, importing a total of 22 heifers, six cows with calf at foot and two bulls.

A further order from a Charolais breeder, based near Nogent le Rotrou, for 10 heifers five cows with calf at foot and one bull is scheduled to take place this summer.

Rémi Fourrier, EBLEX export manager France, said: “It is encouraging to see that, with the support of EBLEX and BLG, the Angus breed is making a start in France. This is particularly significant at a time when feed availability and price has become a real issue for herds of large cattle built with continental breeds. It clearly demonstrates the excellent breeding stock in England and the quality of beef being produced, which is being recognised in overseas markets.”
