Speaking during the event’s Question Time session where he was a panellist, Nick Allan emphasised the importance of finding markets for all parts of the carcase and taking a “cuts, not carcase” approach.

Responding to a question imports and self-sufficiency, he pointed out that we do not produce enough beef not to import.

“We must think global as we don't eat the whole carcase in this country. We want to take part in global trade, not isolate ourselves,” Mr Allan said.

“This is not at odds with supporting local markets.”

Also on the panel at Newark Showground were Rt Hon Jim Paice MP, Minister of State for Food and Agriculture, Adam Henson, Lloyds TSB Agriculture – Agricultural Ambassador, farmer and broadcaster, Paul Westaway, farmer and partner of Livestock International Ltd, Chris Dodds, executive secretary, Livestock Auctioneers Association, and Marcus O’Sullivan, managing director of JBS Global (UK) Ltd.

Since August last year, EBLEX has helped to open more than 30 non-EU export markets for English producers and processors, with South Africa the latest country to be added to the list.
