“This will be the first of three field days to be held this year on the Gordonton focus farm of Wayne and Raewyn Reynolds,” says DairyNZ senior consulting officer Hamilton North Phil Irvine.

The focus farm is an initiative of local farmers and the Pasture Renewal Leadership Group; a DairyNZ-led industry group, including researchers, the seed industry, farmers and agricultural contractors, formed to develop better tools, resources and advice for farmers.

“Our aim is to ensure farmers receive timely and consistent messages from all industry sources on pasture renewal and persistence,” says DairyNZ Development Team Leader and Pasture Renewal Leadership Group member Rob Brazendale. “Using local focus farms helps us customise information for local conditions, as well as providing a real life example in action.”

The event will feature presentations from industry experts and host farmer Wayne Reynolds.

“We will hear from Wayne in the ‘Host farmer’s own story’ and ‘Pasture Condition Scoring Tool’ sessions,” says Phil Irvine. “DairyNZ senior scientist Dr Errol Thom will give us a reality check on what we can expect from pastures, Warren King from AgResearch will present the pasture monitoring project results and we will review good practice management.”

The event will be held at the Reynolds’ farm, 377 Woodlands Rd, Gordonton (SN 72654) on Wednesday, 23 February from 10.30 am to 1pm, followed by lunch provided by Farmlands, Agriseeds and Fonterra.
