Bulgaria Reports Another Outbreak of FMD

BULGARIA - The Bulgarian veterinary authorities have reported another outbreak of foot and mouth disease, this time affecting cattle, sheep and goats too.

The World Organisation for Animal Health received follow-up report no. 1 yesterday, 11 January.

According to the report, the latest outbreak took place at Kosti village in Burgas. A total of 194 cattle and 72 swine were found susceptible to the disease. No deaths were recorded and no animals were destroyed.

Meat and meat products from infected wild boars are considered as the source of the disease spreading in the domestic population.

121 out of 194 blood samples from cattle were tested and one positive result by non-structural protein ELISA was obtained. 22 out of 72 blood samples from pigs were tested and 8 positive results by non-structural protein ELISA were obtained.

Stamping out of all susceptible animals started yesterday and will finish today, 12 January.
