Veteran industry observers claim it is the first time genuine store weaner steers of any breed had beaten the $1000 mark.

T&R Pastoral from Murray Bridge, SA, bid to $2.45/kg or $1012/head for 27 March born steers from Geoff and Di Notman’s Mt Widderin property at Skipton, Victoria.

These EU accredited Mt Widderin steers averaged 413 kgs and carried Injemira and Yarram Park genetics.

At the four Western District calf sales in the week, 6000 Hereford store steer weaners averaging 328 kgs made an average $2.32/kg or $761/head as feedlotters, processors, backgrounders and finishers were prepared to pay more for Herefords than for any other breed.

Meanwhile during the same week at Wodonga, 1400 Hereford weaner steers at an average weight of 349.5 kgs sold for an average $2.33/kg or $805/head.
