Bulgaria Reports FMD in Wild Boar

BULGARIA - The Bulgarian veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of foot and mouth disease affecting wild boar (Sus scrofa).

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on Friday, 7 January.

According to the report, the outbreak was confirmed on Tuesday last, 4 January in Burgas. One case was reported; no deaths have been recorded.

The report states that three wild boars were shot during the normal hunting season in an area located at around 2km from the Bulgarian border with the Republic of Turkey. In one of those animals foot lesions were noted that prompted investigations for foot and mouth disease.

The source of the outbreak has not been identified.
