Cattlemen: Time to punish Japan

It's time to retaliate against Japan for its refusal to buy U.S. beef, the Nebraska Cattlemen stated in a letter to members of Congress and the Bush administration. Congressmen have strongly hinted that the United States could slap high trade tariffs on Japanese products if that country doesn't resume imports of U.S. beef. Before the first case of mad cow disease was discovered in the United States in late 2003, it had exported more than $1.4 billion in beef to Japan annually. "We've jumped through every hoop," said Michael Kelsey, executive vice president of the Nebraska Cattlemen. "What we find and continue to find is political protectionism."
