FMD Breaks Out in More of China's Swine

CHINA - The Chinese veterinary authorities have sent follow up report no. 11 to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), stating that more of the country's swine have been infected with foot and mouth disease (FMD).

According to the report, the foot and mouth disease virus (type O) has spread to Xinjiang wherein 83 animals have been infected and 1280 have shown susceptibility to the disease. All affected animals have been destroyed.

The source of the outbreak remains unknown and is still under investigation.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), real-time PCR and virus isolation tests were carried out in swine at the Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute. The results confirmed the presence of the virus.
