South Asia Ready to Order More Beef
SOUTH EAST ASIA - Supported by the fastest growing population and economies in the world, South East Asia & Greater China continued attracting an increasing beef trade to the region.Beef exports from New Zealand (January to April) and the US (January to March) to South East Asia & Greater China jumped to new records. Meanwhile, shipments from Brazil and Australia, restricted by supply, eased during the four months to April, reports Meat and Livestock Australia.
The 30 per cent rise in New Zealand beef shipments to South East Asia & Greater China during January to April was highlighted by a surge to Indonesia – a market where supply from Australia fell short – and the Philippines. US beef to the region during January to March also increased 39 per cent, backed by the strong demand for beef in China and Taiwan.
During the four months to April, Brazil exported 16 per cent less beef to South East Asia & Greater China compared with a year earlier. Hong Kong and the Philippines remained the dominant buyers of Brazilian beef in the region.
India exported a record volume of 205,207 tonnes swt of carabeef to South East Asia & Greater China in 2009, up five per cent from the previous year.
Australian beef exports to the region during January to April eased three per cent on 12 months earlier, despite rises in shipments to Philippines and Thailand. Australian beef exports are expected to increase in the second half of 2010, as producers start to turnoff more finished cattle.
