Prime Cattle Quotes Fall

NORTHERN IRELAND, UK - Early this week the factories have reduced their quotes for prime cattle to 266-270p/kg. Most of the plants are quoting a base price of 268p/kg for steers and 268- 270p/kg for heifers. One plant has quoted 266p/kg for steers and heifers. However, with the others paying at least 2p/kg more, it is hard to see buyers securing supply at that price.

This reduction in quotes may reflect the strong supply that has been evident in recent weeks, with the cattle kill reaching 10,000 head in two successive weeks in mid-April. Producers will be watching closely to see whether this high level of throughput is sustained at lower prices.

Last week’s reported prices showed average steer prices increasing very slightly on the previous week, with average heifer prices falling 0.7p/kg. Average young bull prices also fell, by 2.3p/kg. There were increases last week however, in the reported U3 price, reflecting the firm quotes. Average U3 steer, heifer and young bull prices increased by around 2p/kg, with the average reported U3 heifer price hitting 279p/kg.

Cow prices were reduced last week for most grades and the average price was 1.6p/kg lower than the previous week.
