China Reports New Outbreak of FMD
CHINA - China has reported a new outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the province of Gansu.According to the World Organisation for Animal Health, the outbreak occured in swine on 17 April at Tianshui in Gansu. 47 animals were reported to be infected by FMD virus (serotype-O), while 403 showed susceptibility to the disease. All susceptible animals were destroyed.
The cause of the outbreak still remains inconclusive. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), real-time PCR and virus isolation tests were conducted in swine at the Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute, where the virus was confirmed to be present.
