Despite a $350m emergency aid package announced recently, Mr Vilsack suggested that improvements to price support and marketing programmes may be required to stabilise the market, reports the Dairy Reporter.

During a farm visit in South Dakota last week, Mr Vilsack is reported to have said that structural changes in the way the dairy industry is currently operated may be the next thing to consider in the long term discussion.

Milk prices in the US are still falling, leaving many dairy farmers unable to cover costs.
