The centre, at Bundoora in Melbourne's northern suburbs, will spearhead research into improved dairy practices, productivity and world competitiveness, reports ABCRural.

Professor German Spangenberg, from Victoria's Department of Primary Industries, says it's the first time dairy research undertaken across Australia will be brought together under one umbrella.

"It would be the largest investment in dairy bio-sciences," he told the news organisation.

"I think it is critical to create a basis of forward innovation to find new discoveries and developments that will address very early challenges we face in the dairy farming sector."
