Meeting of Minds Over Spain's Dairy Troubles
SPAIN - PROLEC recently met with representatives of the Agricultural Council of the Regional Government of Galacia in a concerted effort to find solutions for the milk sector. At the end of February, Xosé Carlos Vega, Vice-President of PROLEC Spain and also President of Galicia's Regional Association, a further representative of PROLEC GALICIA, Juan Álvarez, and PROLEC Spain's Secretary General, Silvia Rodríguez met up with Alfredo Suárez Canal, representing the Agricultural Council of the Galician Regional Government, as well as the Director General of Production, Industry and Quality of Agricultural Produce, Antonio Santiago Oca.
The focus of discussion was the current situation facing the milk sector, with PROLEC announcing it was launching several petitions including one relating to the producer price and milk quota. Since last year, milk prices in Galicia have fallen by 72 per cent. A circumstance that calls for rapid action in this Spanish region as well.
One central demand to surface during the course of the meeting and receive support from the Agricultural Council and PROLEC was the provision of compensation from the EU fund for investments made in the milk quota. Because for Spanish dairy farmers too, these investments will be virtually worthless when the quota comes to an end in 2015.
PROLEC also announced it was seeking admission to various organisations in the country with important connections to the dairy sector. This is aimed at providing institutions, such as Galicia's Milk Observation Centre or the Mesa de Leche (Milk Table) as well as the Galicia's recently established Centre for Milk Technology, with expertise in relation to dairy matters.
