U.S. Cattle on Feed Down Six Per Cent

US - This report contains the 2008 monthly cattle on feed estimates for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head. Also included are the US number of feedlots, inventory, and annual marketings by size group for 2007 and 2008.

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.3 million head on February 1, 2009. The inventory was 6 percent below 1 February  2008.

Placements in feedlots during January totaled 1.86 million, four per cent above 2008. Net placements were 1.79 million head. During January, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 380,000, 600-699 pounds were 505,000, 700-799 pounds were 553,000 and 800 pounds and greater were 420,000.

Marketings of fed cattle during January totalled 1.74 million, six per cent below 2008. This is the lowest fed cattle marketings for the month of January since the series began in 1996.

Other disappearance totaled 67,000 during January, 12 per cent above 2008.

2008 Cattle on Feed and Annual Size Group Estimates

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head represented 81.1 per cent of all cattle and calves on feed in the United States on 1 January 2009, down from 81.6 per cent on 1 January 2008.

Marketings of fed cattle for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head during 2008 represented 84.7 per cent of all cattle marketed from feedlots in the United States, up from 84.0 per cent during 2007.
