The cattle slaughtering was at record numbers, as well as beef exports to Russia (all cow beef) and the European Union, reports FarmingUK.

Summer is now normally a time for plenty of grass in Uruguay and cattle numbers are nornally at their highest, says the news organisation. According to the Department of Agriculture, the national beef herd is 10 per cent short on cows and heifers, compared to the figures for last year.

Farmers have been taking advantage of the good prices and demand for cattle, selling their stock for slaughter.
