Nine Million Cattle to be Vaccinated in Q1
INDIA - Commissioner of the Department of Animal Husbandry, P.R. Sampath, has announced that his department plans to cover more than nine million farm animals under a vaccination programme against foot-and-mouth disease.

While appealing to the farmers to insure their cattle to get compensation in case of unexpected death of their livestock, Commissioner P.R. Sampath announced the department's plan to cover the farm animals under a vaccination programme during the current financial year for foot-and-mouth disease with the 180 million rupee (INR) assistance released by the Union Government.
The Hindu reported his remarks from the inauguration of a seminar on artificial insemination on 27 December. Mr Sampath said that farmers, by paying just INR 125 per milk animal a year, could insure their cow, worth about INR 10,000, as the Centre would be giving a similar amount towards premium. To take advantage of this offer, the must have vaccinated their cows.
Since the death of 1,074 farm animals due to foot-and-mouth disease in 334 outbreaks in Tamil Nadu during the last year, a massive vaccination programme was launched to cover 85 per cent of the total animal population. This time, the target had been revised to cover 95 per cent of the animals in the State which stood eighth in milk production in the country and the second largest producer of eggs.
