Michael Doran said the new Suckler Welfare Scheme has proved itself to be a major success and its future success is dependent upon an €80 per cow payment going forward.

The IFA livestock leader said Minister Smith has been very strong in stating that €250m funding for the scheme negotiated under the Partnership Agreement is available and this will be honored in full. “At this stage, Minister Smith should make it clear that the payment rate will remain at €80 per cow for 2009.”

Michael Doran said the scheme has advanced critically important issues for the Irish beef sector and delivered improved breeding and recording, better weaning and improved animal welfare.

“It is vital that the payment rate is maintained at €80 per cow to ensure there is no major fall off in participants.”
