Farmers Meet in Argentina
ARGENTINA - The members of the farm associations liaison committee, met with the vice president on Wednesday to analyze the situation in the farm sector.According to the Argentine Beef Packers Association, the president of the farm associations Mario Llanbia (CRA), Hugo Biolcati (Rural Society), Eduardo Buzzi (FAA) and Carlos Garetto (ConAgra) had their meeting with Vice President Julio Cobos, at the vice presidents senate office.
The farms leaders talked with Cobos about “the need to recover productivity conditions for most of the sectors activities as this would guarantee the possibility of maintaining employment”, they told reporters.
They said that in the short term, the farming sector needs tax and fiscal measures, while in the long term they need a comprehensive agricultural plan.
“Cobos agreed with our demands”, Biolcati said and added that the vice president realized that it is paramount to set down priorities now.
Since Cobos sided with the farmers in the Senate, against the president and the government, he has distanced himself from the president, and the relationship between the government and the farmers has deteriorated.
The farmers have warned that at any moment the plight of the dairy farmers, could erupt in more roadblocks and stoppages.
Meanwhile in the Supreme Court of Argentina, a ruling is expected on the proposed amendment 125 farm tax, that was the cause of the farmers dispute in March.
The Supreme court are to rule if the proposed law, was in fact constitutional or not.
The motion to enact the law was defeated by one vote (that of the vice president) in the Senate on July 17.
While the courts decision is only a formality, the precedent will be of interest to both sides when the ruling is made.
