Bluetongue: Enough is Enough

UK - So FG has an outbreak of bluetongue almost on the doorstep of its offices. And even more worryingly, it is of the new BTV1 strain, for which there is currently no vaccine in the UK.

According to Defra, the farmer involved had done nothing wrong, clearly adhering to all the import rules and regulations. It must be gut-wrenching when you are told your stock has the disease – then there’s the worry about what it might mean for other livestock farmers.

While everyone can talk about how awful it is that someone could import such risk, chances are many of FG’s readers will know someone who has imported stock in the last year.
