NI Prime Cattle Down Twelve Per Cent

UK - The total Northern Ireland prime cattle kill is down over 12 per cent to less than 300,000 head in the 10 month period of the year to date, says a Livestock and Meat Commission news bulletin.

The total throughput for all cattle is down eight per cent to 357,000 head. When comparing the first ten months of 2008 with 2007, the kill is down in all prime cattle categories (steers, heifers and young bulls).

The other food chain categories, cows, mature bulls and calves, all show an increase with the number of cows slaughtered up 19 per cent, equivalent to 10,000 head. The adult bull kill is up 18 per cent which is an increase of only 400 head, but the number of calves slaughtered is up 750 head. These trends a re accentuated over the last four-week period compared to October 2007.

Four week comparison

The prime cattle kill is down 14 per cent to 30,000 head from 35,000 head for the four week period ending 1 November.

Steers show the highest headage fall (3,000 head) with young bulls showing the largest fall in percentage terms (25 per cent). The number of food chain cows killed increased by 41 per cent to 7,400 head.
