After the summer washout in some regions left farmers unable to access grass to cut, the simple scheme puts farmers who are short of feed, fodder and bedding in touch with those who have an excess.

The initiative, which went live last week, has been launched after reports of hardship from some livestock farmers feeling the effects of the wet summer. Arable farmers have also reported a surplus of feed cereal which has proved difficult to market through the usual channels.

NFU combinable crops board chairman Ian Backhouse said: "This scheme is a practical way of helping arable growers with a surplus of feed cereal aid livestock farmers who are suffering from a lack of fodder and bedding in the run up to winter, when animals are more likely to be housed."

To join the scheme submit your request by selecting your region on this page of NFU Online. Give your name, membership number, location and contact details along with what you are trying to source or sell.
