Trade of all breeding cattle born after January 1999 has resumed, now that Ottawa has reached an agreement with Mexican officials to remove the temporary restrictions, said Federal Agriculture minister Gerry Ritz.

"The government took swift action to have the Mexican border re-opened to Alberta's high-quality cattle," stated Ritz.

In August, Mexico banned imports of Alberta beef and dairy breeding cattle -- but did not stopping the flow of beef into the country -- in a move Ritz and industry officials complained had no legitimacy from a scientific perspective.
