Dairy Diet: Losing Weight With Better Bones

UK - A weight loss diet high in protein and low-fat dairy improves calcium intake and may help to preserve bone mineral density (BMD), according to a study published in the June issue of the Journal of Nutrition.

Dr Judith Bryans, Director of the Dairy Council and Registered Nutritionist says: “High protein diets with low intakes of calcium have been shown to have a negative effect on bone health, while this study suggests that high protein diets which are accompanied by adequate calcium may help maintain bone health.

“With both the incidence of obesity and osteoporosis on the increase, a diet promoting weight loss while maintaining bone mineral density is valuable, as bone loss and increased risk of fracture are commonly associated with weight loss.”

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on BMD of a high protein diet that includes 3 daily servings of dairy, compared with a conventional weight loss diet, which typically combines a higher intake of carbohydrate with a lower protein and dairy intake.
