Record Slaughter Numbers from Uruguay
URUGUAY - Last week saw Uruguay reach its highest weekly slaughter on record, at 67,231 head, surpassing the previous record set in the week ending 20 May 2006. The record slaughter was fuelled by a large number of cows, which made up 49.3% of the total.

Despite the increased supplies, Uruguayan cattle prices continue to be unusually high for this time of year, as the country enters the off season and producers increase turnoff.
The record slaughter comes as a result of strong international demand, with high prices and demand from both Russia and the EU (which currently has a partial ban on Brazilian imports). Similarly, the previous weekly slaughter record in May 2006 was the result of a surge in demand from Russia and Europe, as both Brazil and Argentina were banned from several markets due to foot and mouth disease outbreaks.
