Concern Over Availability of Vaccine Outside the Zones

UK - British farmers are being prevented from stopping the spread of bluetongue because of strict European Union rules outlawing vaccination outside of a Protection Zone.

The criticism comes from UK Independence Party’s Eastern Counties MEP Julian Titford, who labelled the rules ‘a farce’ this week and called on the Government to put pressure on the EU to change its stance.

He said: “Since when do insects carrying a disease respect zones drawn up by bureaucrats?

“This is a dangerous disease and requires urgent and sensible preventative action, but Defra is hamstrung by EU rules which simply don’t make sense.
