The European Commission has raised the age limit at which the vertebral column has to be removed from beef from 24 to 30 months, based on the best scientific advice from the European Food Safety Authority, and following three months of statutory scrutiny by the European Parliament.

John Cross, Chairman of EBLEX Ltd, the Beef and Lamb Sector Company said: "This is a much-awaited decision which will be warmly welcomed by the whole industry.

"Not only does it give the shopper greater choice in the range of beef products on offer, but it also provides an opportunity for smaller butchers' shops and processors in particular to provide top quality, mature beef on the bone which is very much in demand."
