If BVD Is To Be Eradicated Then Fundamental Change In Attitude is a Necessity

UK - Despite there being a compelling financial case for eradicating BVD, some fundamental changes in attitude throughout the cattle industry and veterinary profession are needed before it is achievable on a national scale.

That was the message from George Caldow of SAC’s Premium Cattle Health Scheme when he addressed vets at a meeting in Tebay, Cumbria.

“We certainly possess enough knowledge – both microbiological and epidemiological – to eradicate BVD,” he said.

“We already have good enough diagnostics, with better ones probably in the pipeline, and effective vaccines, as long as they’re used according to manufacturers’ recommendations and there are places where it’s been proved that eradication can be achieved – Scandinavia and Shetland, for example.

“Wherever BVD has been eradicated there has existed a strong local sense of pride and identity, together with a well organised cattle industry with a strong unity of purpose.
