Last week's Carver County Dairy Expo provided producers with the opportunity to listen to veterinarian Sam Leadley.

Leadley, who works for the Attica Veterinary Association, said producers should have two primary goals for dairy calves.

"They need to help the calf adapt to her new environment and help the calf maintain good health," he said.

Producers can help a newborn calf adapt to their environment is to dry the calf after the dam has licked it off.

"Using towels from the milking parlor won't do," said Leadley. "Instead of using towels form the parlor, use some old bath towels becaues they are able to absorb more moisture."
