Schering-Plough Launch Pour-On Insecticide
US - Schering-Plough Animal Health Corporation today announced the release of ULTRA SABER, a new pour-on insecticide that controls horn flies on beef cattle and calves. ULTRA SABER is a new type of pour-on insecticide that contains 1 percent lambdacyhalothrin and 5 percent piperonyl butoxide, a synergist which improves insecticidal activity.“The horn fly is one of the most significant and economically destructive external parasites in pastured cattle today, causing animal blood loss, reduced feed efficiency and weight gain and lower milk production,” said Norm Stewart, DVM, Technical Services Veterinarian, Schering-Plough Animal Health Corp. “It is estimated that horn flies cause the U.S. cattle industry $730 million in lost production annually.”

Field trial results show new ULTRA SABER was the most effective treatment for reducing initial and subsequent horn fly populations during the eight-week trial period.
“Older fly control products may lose efficacy over time and cattle producers are in need of new, more effective fly control products. ULTRA SABER is a highly efficacious combination of insecticide and synergist. This unique combination results in increased insecticidal activity and is another tool in the Schering-Plough ectoparasiticide portfolio of products designed to meet this growing need for more effective fly control,” Stewart said.
The product also controls lice in beef cattle and calves. Lice infestations, which peak in late winter, cause reduced average daily gains. Infested cows also produce less milk for their calves.
ULTRA SABER is available now through animal health suppliers nationwide.
