Farmers Using Peas for Tastier Beef
US - It`s a new idea in the United States, but feeding peas to cows has been used in parts of Europe for a long time. Ranchers who use peas for about 20 percent of their feed for cows can see a significant increase in flavor, reports KFYR TV.

An enzyme that is released after a cow has digested peas makes the beef juicier and more tender. That`s a taste that can really pay off for producers.
"It`s been a little over two years since we have had peas in front of the rations for the feed lot cattle," Alvin Braun, a Bismarck area rancher. "It has also made me aware of that as a feed product. It was not something that I had raised here on my own farm before, but it has made me aware. Through that awareness I`ve spoken to a number of other producers who are also using peas."
Larry White of the Northern Pulse Growers will be talking about feeding peas during this year`s Central Dakota Bull Day, January 26t, at Farmers Livestock in Bismarck.
It will feature 40 pens of bulls from the region`s seedstock producers, representing the latest in cattle genetics. The bulls will be on display from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Following noon lunch and White`s talk, the bulls will be paraded through the sales ring and information will be given about each breeder`s production and marketing program.
