Lameness Under the Spotlight
UK - Actions to prevent and tackle lameness will be the hot topic for discussion at a Milk Development Council (MDC) open event being held in conjunction with Myerscough College on Thursday 31 January. Speakers at the event will discuss the causes of lameness as well as prevention and treatment to help dairy farmers reduce the cost of lameness to their herd. The causes of lameness in dairy cattle, including both disease and environment based factors, will be detailed by Jo Speed of the MDC. Norman Walker, an independent foot trimmer, will discuss and demonstrate trimming methods, as well as examining the prevention and treatment of lameness, and industry products and their uses will be explained by a representative of Pfizer, the research-based pharmaceutical company.
Mrs Speed says: “Complaints of the foot have a major financial impact on dairy herds, with links to loss in milk production, herd fertility and cow condition. At this event, the speakers will address some of these issues by explaining the physiology of the foot and examining how different ailments affect cows.”
The meeting will be held at Lodge Farm, St Michael’s Road, Bilsborrow on Thursday 31 January from 11am to 2pm.
