China Recognises Status of Argentina over FMD
CHINA - The Chinese agriculture ministry and general administration for quality and food safety has recognised Argentina's foot and mouth free status in line with World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) measures. From the end of November, he Chinese borders opened up to Argentine meat and meat products from cattle, pigs and sheep, which the Chinese authorities said now fulfilled their sanitary and phytosanitary regulations.
The Chinese authorities have adopted measures based on the OIE standards to evaluate risk.
In March of this year the OIE had extended the FMD-free without vaccination status to the provinces of River Negro and Neuquén. The part of the River Negro region which borders Paraguay and Bolivia has been granted FMD free status with vaccination. However, a strip 15 km wide each side of the border has had its status suspended, while the region is carefully monitored.
The new agreement was signed by the head of the Chinese veterinary authority Jia Youling and the head of the Argentine food safety and veterinary authority during a visit to Argentina by the Chinese delegation last week.
Mr Jia Youling said that he recognised the work of Senasa in its fight to control and eradication foot and mouth disease.
"We have taken the example of Senasa in the fight with the disease in our country," he said.
