Speaking to MLAs, government officials and leading industry figures at the Northern Ireland Parliament Building earlier this week, David Curry praised farmers who had made the UK dairy industry 'fit for the future'.

He said farmers had been working in the toughest of market conditions with climate change concerns, pressure on food manufacturers amid obesity worries and a changing market place.

"We are all striving to ensure a profitable and sustainable dairy industry," he said.

"We need to continue to shape the future of the industry and address the many challenges that the industry faces and put dairy farmers first."

Environmental and nutritional issues were discussed, but price was also high on the agenda.

"Milk price is, and always will be the number one issue for dairy farmers," Mr Curry continued.

"Dairy farmers cannot afford to ignore the wider challenges that affect our industry and today's reception was a welcome opportunity to examine those issues in detail."
