Japan Ag Official: U.S. Must Explain Cattle With BSE Symptoms
JAPAN - A senior Japanese agricultural official said Thursday that the U.S. needs to explain reports of "downer" cattle - animals displaying symptoms thought to indicate mad-cow disease - being used for meat in the U.S in order to resume U.S. beef shipments to Japan. "The U.S. has said it wants to improve (inspection procedures). We'd like to ask for an explanation as to what is going on," Vice Farm Minister Mamoru Ishihara said. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has found that meat from 20 downer cattle - animals who have difficulty walking, thought to be a symptom of mad-cow disease - were released into the market, Ishihara said at a press conference.Source: Cattle Network
