U.S. halts cattle imports from Coahuila, Mexico
US - Cattle imports from the Mexican state of Coahuila were stopped today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said. The suspension came after several recent tuberculosis cases were traced to cattle, mostly feeders, from Coahuila, said Karen Eggert, APHIS spokeswoman in Riverdale, Md.
U.S. regulations require documentation that cattle imports from Mexico are tested and certified tuberculosis-free, Eggert said. Mexico was unable to meet those requirements on cattle from Coahuila, she said.
Most of the imports from Coahuila enter through Texas, and APHIS has been working with Texas state animal health officials as well as APHIS counterparts in Mexico on the issue, Eggert said in a telephone interview.
Derrell S. Peel, Oklahoma State University Extension livestock marketing specialist, said the suspension is not expected to have a major impact on overall cattle imports from Mexico.
