The so-called 'mini-dairy package' introduces a number of technical changes to regime, which include, notably:

  • Permitting protein standardisation of milk powders in line with international standards
  • Removing the current trigger mechanism for taking butter into intervention
  • Introducing changes to the drinking milk regulation to allow greater freedom to label products as milk
  • Harmonisation of aid rates under the school milk subsidy scheme
The NFU produced a briefing paper on the anticipated proposed changes in December 2006 and the Commission proposals were made in February 2007(see NFU Online).

We will be seeking to respond to the consultation by the deadline of 19 April 2007. The Dairy Board has already given an initial assessment of the Commission proposals, judging them to be sensible and constructive.

However if there are further views that members and regional boards would like us to take into account on any aspect of the proposals, please get views back to me by 15 April 2007.

As the proposals have not materially changed since our initial briefing note was prepared NFU is not proposing to issue a separate consultation on this.
