His comment comes in response to a campaign by the Beef and Dairy Producers Association of Jamaica against what it says is the influx of beef products from Costa Rica and other countries.

In a statement published Sunday, the association said imported beef burgers are being sold locally at questionable prices.

The farmers are of the view that the importation of beef or beef products at these prices will result in the destruction of the cattle industry which has not yet recovered from the fallout in the late 90's.

However, Agriculture Minister Roger Clarke says he is not convinced that the importation of beef products is having any impact on local cattle industry.

According to him, the country has not been producing enough beef.

Against this background he said the Ministry could not ban the importation of beef, which already attracts import duties.
