During July, total trading reached a record monthly high of 271 contracts, with this record surpassed only two months later in September, at 276 contracts. A total of six total monthly trading records were broken during 2006. There was also an improvement in the depth of trading, with 40% of trading occurring three to six months out. The depth of trading was highlighted in late November, by which time trading had occurred on all contracts as far out as March 2008. An exchange for physical also took place for the first time in the history of the contract.
Trading volumes tapered off at the end of 2006, as the drought conditions prompted participants to adopt a more conservative approach.
