Bega Cheese chairman Barry Irvin says water supplies are reaching critically low levels both for irrigation and stock, while good quality fodder is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.

Mr Irvin says Bega Valley producers are better off than most, after special drought payments were approved in October.

But he says unless there is rain by Christmas producers will be struggling to maintain milk supplies.
