NZ beef exporters fighting for US recognition of BSE-free status

New Zealand's billion-dollar beef trade to the United States has been caught out by a failure by some arms of the Bush administration to recognise New Zealand cattle are free of mad cow disease.
The discovery in December of the first case of mad cow disease in the United States – a holstein dairy cow in the state of Washington – prompted the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) this month to stop human consumption of cattle intestines in that country.
